Adium

Talking to MSN contacts from Yahoo! accounts, and vice versa

In the current official client for MSN, MSN users can talk to Yahoo! users. Likewise, in the official client for Yahoo!, Yahoo! users can talk to MSN users.

Adium currently doesn't support this. In the case of MSN, the library we use (LibPurple) does not implement the version of the MSN protocol required to chat with Yahoo! users.

All this also goes for being able to add contacts from the other protocol to your contact list. Of course, even if you could, it wouldn't be too useful, since you can't chat with them.

We do intend to support this feature at a future time, but we don't know when it will happen.

Google Summer of Code note

One of Pidgin's Google Summer of Code 2007 projects is support for the MSN protocol version 14; hopefully, LibPurple (upon which Pidgin is based) will support MSN↔Yahoo! chat soon. For our part, after the GSoC project completes, we'll be implementing UI for at least some, possibly all, of the new MSN features that will then be supported the library. Once that's implemented, we then need to test all the new features and make sure they work (on our side, on their side, and in between). We have no idea when all that will be done.
