Creating a Ticket

This page is an attempt to simplify and explain the ticket creation process to users. While we do already have ReportingBugs and RequestingFeatures, I think that having a short, simple, concise document that explains to users what exactly they are doing when they file a ticket to trac will go a long way in reducing the number dupes and invalid tickets. Without further ado, the document:

1. Know What You Are Doing

Trac (this web page) is the ticket-management system that the Adium developers use to keep track of bugs and requested features. If you have questions about Adium or its features, please see the FrequentlyAskedQuestions or the documentation page. If that doesn't help, please feel free to ContactUs. Please don't file a ticket with just a question; Trac tickets are for bug reports (defects) and feature requests (enhancements) only.

2. Search

Adium's Trac has lots of tickets (over 3000 4000 of them!), so chances are your problem/feature has already been reported. If you think you have to file a ticket please search for one like it before creating a new one. The best place to start is in the ConceptIndexOfTickets page, where all the most popular tickets are listed, and then the search page.

Finding and removing duplicate tickets takes up time for the developers, so if a ticket with your problem already exists, just add any relevant information to the prior ticket in the comments. It will be much appreciated.

3. File a Ticket Properly

If you're experiencing a problem no one else is, or your feature request is unique, please do file a ticket. However, we do ask that you read ReportingBugs and/or RequestingFeatures before doing so. This way, your ticket can get the attention it deserves and we don't have to waste time asking things that are common to all tickets. (i.e. crash reports, system versions, etc.)

Thanks for taking the time to help us out!
