No offence but this seems rather hard to believe that Adium caused this... I could see accounts and contacts, but logs? They're each in their own separate file and I highly doubt someone added an rm -rf to 1.2.3...

Are you sure this isn't caused by something else? I assume you upgraded from 1.2.2? What are the steps to reproduce? Did you download it from the website then replace Adium in Applications with a drag and drop or did you use the automatic updater in Adium?

If this happened twice, which versions were you doing it with? Did you downgrade to 1.2.2 then re-upgrade to 1.2.3 and your entire Adium 2.0 folder was a fresh new on in ~/Library/Application Support/ ?

Unfortunately, I can confirm this. I had something similar happen to me a few days ago. I upgraded to 1.2.3 because Adium asked me to, and when it restarted it showed me the wizard to start adding accounts. I immediately shut it down, and made a tarball with all files related to Adium (using "find"). They appeared to all be in ".Trash". Afterwards, I tried copying those files back were they came from, which according to http://ask.metafilter.com/46793/How-do-I-move-my-Adium-settings I figured would be: ~/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0/ ~/Library/Preferences/com.adiumX.adiumX.plist

Unfortunately, after copying the files to that location and restarting Adium, it again showed me the wizard to add accounts...

I kinda gave up and hoped that if I would add my accounts again, it would recognize the logs files and settings and that the only annoyance would be that I'd have to re-add all accounts, but unfortunately, after re-adding them, it didn't appear to be using those files. I can't look at previous chats from within Adium, and my settings were all gone...

I must confess that when upgrading I haven't read all the dialogs that Adium showed me during the upgrade. I figured that whatever options I picked during upgrade would be okay, and that it would surely not have asked me to delete settings or log files or accounts or anything important.

takis: please answer all the questions from my reply. I already know you used the auto updater, but which version were you upgrading from, and if you look at the Adium 2.0 folder there isn't a single thing that appears to be from the old install? Just to confirm, you say the contents of the Adium 2.0 folder and the adiumX.plist were in the Trash?

If you download the version you had previously then upgrade again via automatic update, can you reproduce it? If so, can you reproduce it by downloading the new version via www.adiumx.com then copying it over the old one in Applications?

We should never close data loss tickets automatically, this could potentially be very severe.

With respect, we've been saying that for years, yet never have we revealed the cause of these types of problems as actually being an issue with Adium... so these tickets just stay lying around somewhere and never get 'fixed' because nobody looks at them. If you feel that this should be open, then either take action to fix it or milestone it somewhere worthwhile and hope it actually gets examined.

The way I see it, just because it's closed means nothing - people can still find it. Having it open doesn't actually mean anything - just look at the tickets in the "Needs dev review" milestone... who actually winds up going through them for code walk-through? Just about nobody. If only a couple people can reproduce the problem and they don't even reply to their tickets to give us the info we need, and nobody is willing to spend hours (potentially) going through code that shouldn't do this to begin with, then what's the good of an open ticket?

People have also reported losing transcripts in #7964 and #9308.

  • status changed from reopened to closed.
  • resolution set to duplicate.
  • milestone changed from Needs feedback from users to zzzDuplicate tickets.

Closing in favour of #7964 and since the user never replied, this is pretty much useless.
