Number of unread conversations instead of total unread messages for Dock icon and Status Menu Item

Description

A preference to display the amount of "unread conversations" for the Dock icon and the Status Menu Item.

Right now (1.2b2), there are a few places where you can see the number of total unread messages:

-the Dock icon -the Status Menu Item -the tab of that conversation (for the number of unread messages for that conversation, of course)

For the number of message of each tab, I find that it makes sense, and I have no complaints.

But I feel that, for the Dock icon and the Status Menu Item, it would be more useful to display the number of "unread conversations" (as in the number of conversations that have new messages).

For instance:

I would look at the Status Menu Item, and it says "3."

So I have 3 new messages... ...but how many contacts/conversations are they from?

3 messages from 1 single contact? Or perhaps 2 from 1 contact and 1 from another? Or perhaps 3 contacts and 1 from each??

And also, you're about to check the messages anyway, so IMO there's no need to know the specific amount of total new messages.

IMO, it'd be more useful to know how many different conversations/contacts has sent you new messages.

It gives you an idea of "oh, I have to check X amount of conversations with new messages."

I think this is a pretty good idea; Number of unread messages really doesn't mean much aside from providing a jolt when you forget to set an away message for 6 hours ;)

I wonder how confusing changing this behavior would be. I like our current way of doing it -- I often ignore messages I see with growl, and note an increase in the unread count. Perhaps I'm weird in that use though…

Perhaps we could do something where the numerical badge shows the number of unread conversations, but it only flashes for 30 seconds when it's a new message. This way when a new message comes in for a conversation that still hasn't been read (ex: second unread message of the same conversation), it flashes again but the number doesn't increase.

Setting to the x milestone since (as far as I can tell) nobody is working on this.

I would suggest that the number displaying the number of unread conversations be a different color than the unread messages. Also, this would allow the possibility to have both numbers displayed in the dock.

Example : red for unread messages and blue for unread conversations

This should ideally be done for a major release. Since 1.3 is quite full at the moment, milestoning for 1.4 for now.
