Description

The reason why

People have a hard time finding Privacy Settings. Some of them may be just zipping right to Preferences and not even seeing the Privacy Settings menu item; others open the Preferences using ⌘-comma, so they don't see any of the menu items at all.

The reasons why not

I'm creating this ticket for discussion, so if you know a reason why we shouldn't do this, please post a comment.

  • milestone set to Adium X 1.2.1.

I agree. This would be a new pane? I think that might allow for moving all privacy related settings to that pane. At the moment we've got settings for it under the account in the File menu as well as in the Adium menu.

  • milestone changed from Adium X 1.2.1 to Adium X 1.3.

This probably shouldn't be done for a point release to avoid translation issues...

What are the chances of this getting done in time for 1.3? Though I really would like to see it done sooner than later, this seems more realistic. What do you think Peter?

Actually I'm thinking perhaps someone should do this for 1.3...

Due to problems presented in #6348... it seems like we need a separate option for the "Block certain contacts" privacy level because it needs to work in tandem with "Allow only contacts on my contact list" in some cases.

A prefpane with the following layout should fix both this ticket and #6348:

Account: [Dropdown of accounts]

Privacy Level: [Dropdown of levels excluding "Block certain contacts"]

Block the following contacts:

[Text area for list of contacts goes here]

This could be done in one of two ways:

  1. Everything below the Account dropdown is subjected to the choice of account and only shows options for that account
  2. The "Block the following contacts" section shows a list of all blocked contacts in all accounts with an account column to indicate which account they belong to

We could also put the fix for #8137 in here...

  • milestone changed from Adium X 1.3 to Adium X 1.4.

This is out of scope for 1.3, one way or another.

#9861 asks for the redesign of the pane as well.
