Google talk icon set in Adium not propagated to server

Reported by: nico76 Assigned to: nobody
Priority: low Milestone: Adium X 1.2.4
Component: Google Talk Version: 1.2.2
Severity: regression Keywords: google talk icon
Cc: Patch: None
Pending: 0

Description

if you change your google talk outside of Adium - by connecting to your Google Talk account with a client that set another icon for example - the icon you have set in adium is not set as Google Talk icon when you log with Adium again.

Of course if you change you global icon again in Adium the google talk icon stored on Google server is updated correctly.

  • priority changed from normal to low.
  • milestone set to Needs dev review.

I can confirm this occurence - easiest way to reproduce is as follows:

  1. Set up your google talk account with iChat and login.
  2. Set your display picture in iChat
  3. Log out of gTalk with iChat
  4. Login to gTalk account with Adium
  5. Confirm with another account (or ask one of your contacts) that your display picture is the same as the one set in iChat - not your default icon configured with Adium.

I think all that is missing is the retreival of the icon from the jabber (in this case gTalk) server.

  • summary changed from Google talk icon not updating on logging to Google talk icon (display picture) not retreived from server upon login.

Actually, I just tested this with svn r19538 and it appears to behave differently from those steps I outlined above. About a week ago that's exactly how it behaved, but now it appears that when I log back in with Adium (step 4) the display picture is indeed updated to the one set in Adium.

Now I also just realized that the creator of this ticket is saying something slightly different - that the display picture is being set to the default Adium picture and not the one that was set on the server... I think that should be the correct behaviour, should it not? Especially considering if you're working with multiple accounts, if you have a different display picture for each, that could get very confusing...

Actually no, your first interpretation of my ticket was the right one. I've just added the last sentence to show that from my point of view the Adium behavior was not consistent :

If you change you global picture => it is uploaded to gtalk server

If you log on Adium it doesn't update your gtalk server stored picture with your Adium global picture. That's I think not logical considering the fact that it's a global picture, and that you can speficed by account a different picture if you wish...

#p788

I just wanted to add that I (and everyone I know) have this problem. However, another IM client was never used. Adium v1.0.4 is the last version this worked, so unless I downgrade to v1.0.4 (which I've tried and verified) my buddy icon is stuck at the last thing it was set to before upgrading.

Perhaps it was a code change in Adium or something on the Google side, but regardless this function works perfectly in 1.0.4 and not at all in any version after. It appears to work because the icon is updated in chat windows, but it isn't updated in anyone's buddy list I'm on, including my own. So unless you are asking "what's my icon?" or have yourself in your buddy list, it appears to work normally.

  • pending changed.

So this is a regression from 1.0.4 to 1.0.5?

Jordan or Eric, do we tag regressions somehow?

  • severity changed from normal to regression.

regression specified via severity dropdown.

What I don't get is that the original poster of this problem was using 1.0.3 when it wasn't working... yet grego33 sepcifies 1.0.4 as working fine... either nico76 reported the wrong version or these are different problems...

Could be a slightly different issue as nico76 reported the issue after having modified their user icon with another client. In my case, no other client in in play. I'm quite sure 1.0.4 is the version it last worked in as I've got a spare Adium_1.0.4.dmg that I install to get this feature working again.

Could it be possible that 1.0.3 is broken, 1.0.4 is fixed, >1.0.4 broken again?

I'll be happy to test any scenarios that would be helpful to you guys. Just let me know what you want me to do.

I can also report that this last functioned for me in version 1.0.4. Since that version, changing my global buddy icon has no effect on what people see my Google Talk icon as, though it looks to me in the chat window that the change has gone through.

Quite frustrating, really. I like changing up my icons frequently.

I think this is related to #7748 (where I just posted a comment; the same applies here).

Sorry, meant #7778 . Really sorry for spamming the system this way.

#p3450 is the correct Pidgin ticket and according to the comments this should be fixed for 2.3.2 (or 2.4.0?) when it is released, which means it should be fixed for Adium soon as well.

  • status changed from new to closed.
  • resolution set to fixed.
  • milestone changed from Waiting on libpurple to Adium X 1.2.4.

Ok, Evan has updated to Libpurple 2.4.0 so one would expect this to be fixed.

03/03/2008 05:51:23 PM changed by jas8522

I can confirm this is definitely fixed for 1.2.4
