Trouble fetching AIM buddy icons

Reported by: anonymous Assigned to: leak
Priority: highest Milestone:
Component: adium-joscar Version:
Severity: major Keywords: buddy icon user icons
Cc: Patch:

Description

It seems that on random buddies, Adium will not display their AIM buddy icons. It doesn't seem to matter WHICH buddy, it just happens, so there's no way to recreate it consistantly. But on the buddies that it does happen to, it never fixes itself. I started using Adium 1.0 at beta 3, and it has been doing the same thing up through beta 5.

I'm experiencing something similar. I can see buddy icons that were there before I upgraded, but ones that have been changed since I went to the beta will not update. Also, after setting a custom buddy icon for a contact, I'm unable to delete the custom picture and go back to the original.

I have the same problem. Seems like two of my contacts always have icons - the rest either never have icons or get icons and then they disappear about 30 minutes later or so. I added my own screen name to the list and it doesn't even fetch that anymore.

  • owner changed from nobody to durin42.

We're fetching icons correctly, so that's not the problem, I suspect this is describing a slight misfeature in Adium, but technically nothing is wrong per se.

(In [16893]) New jars that broadcast "Buddy Icon" capability, although it doesn't actually seem to matter if we do or not... Refs #4723

Ticket note: [16893] was later reverted by durin42. Additional note is that other tickets, such as #4723, are duplicates of this one -- it's definitely an issue reported by multiple users.

I'm seeing slightly different behaviour. I've added myself to my buddy list (AIM/YAHOO/MSN). I'm using a script called "%_Artwork" to change my icon to the current iTunes artwork. I have the info window for my contact entry open so I can see the icon associated with all three protocols. Upon running the script, the MSN icon changes immediately, next the AIM icon changes but then immediately reverts to the icon that was there before (it always does this..), then finally the Yahoo icon changes. Yahoo always seems to take a while.

I have posted in the forums about this issue, and you can see a screenshot of the problem: http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic.php?t=8624

  • owner changed from durin42 to leak.
  • status changed from new to assigned.

Could someone post a joscar log and ethereal log of this happening? I can't reproduce it, icons work fine for me.

I have no idea if this will help, but here's an example. My friend Zach's buddy icon shows up as the infamous white owl in the message window, but shows up as the standard aim-guy on the contact list attached is the screenshot, as well as the txt file of the joscar log--the log was cleared, then i "got info" on my friend zach, selected all, and saved the text...hopefully thats what you guys need.

I added some Adium side debug logging in [17129] which shows that the ByteBlock we're getting has no data inside of it.

I just happened to notice that the tooltip on buddies whose icons are not showing up are also missing the AIM service icon tag (the one thats new for 1.0) on the tooltip...related by some chance?

Hey evan, I did some debugging as well, and found that the packets I'm getting from the server have empty icon data. I think there's something fishy going on. I wonder if there's some new flag we need to set, or some new way of getting buddy icons that somehow every other client knows about. Or, maybe it's just a joscar bug. I need to look into it further.

There is another reported problem that I experienced as well, I was wondering if they're related. See ticket #4659 for details; there are probably duplicates of that as well

I have been having this issue ever since 1.0b1. None of my contacts' icons were being updated, and they would not receive an updated one from me. Even after completely fresh installs of Adium (both beta and 0.89.1), I continued to receive no buddy icons, and no one received mine.

All of a sudden today, I have begun receiving icons from *some* buddies, and they have begun to receive mine. Perhaps something has changed on the AIM server that allows for Adium buddy icon updates once again?

gshapiro writes: An AIM developer (i.e., AOL employee) posted this in his blog:

Q: Some of my buddies on my buddy list have custom buddy icons, but I don't see them in Triton. What's up with that?
A: There is a problem on the host where the client is not given all of the user's buddy icons. This should be fixed in the very near future.

Perhaps this is not an Adium problem at all.

To 1.0.1 with this until we find out.

Is this still a problem with the 1.0 betas?

note - there is a separate issue with trunk which does not belong on this ticket but is already in another ticket.

Replying to mlf:

It seems that it may be better, although there is something strange to note: there are some buddies that I have not talked to and their buddy icon displays fine, while others I have left a message for (with no response from them at any point)--so technically a conversation has not happened with these people either--their icon shows up as the standard aim guy, and as noted above, the aim service icon in the tooltip does not display. It just seems that the retrieval of information isn't 100% consistent
