Sync Adium logs across machines

Reported by: mickfox@mac.com Assigned to: earthmkii (accepted)
Priority: low Milestone: Adium X 1.4
Component: Adium Core Version: 0.81
Severity: normal Keywords: sync logs
Cc: Patch: None

Description

I use Adium on two machines and when searching the logs sometimes forget which machine I was on when having a particular conversation. It would be nice if I could have all my logs on each machine, possibly using the new .Mac Sync API.

this would be awesome, sync logs and accounts over .Mac. Make me one happy camper. Yes indeed :)

I'll second this one, i hate having two separate logs to look through.

in the meantime, look into PortableAdium. if you duplicate your Adium.app, then apply the PortableAdium instructions to the copy, and keep the referenced folder with the copy at all times, you'll have a self-contained Adium you can move between any Macs that can run it.

  • milestone set to Adium X 1.1.
  • field_haspatch changed.

bgannin has a lot of experience with the .mac sync api I do believe, maybe we could use his expertise here. This isn't something required for 1.0, so moving to 1.1. It would be nice indeed.

On a side note, maybe we could have some sort of log viewer sharing in adium?

Certainly be happy to look into it, it shouldn't be too hard, especially once the log format is redone. All the formats should be easily sync-ready, given they are text-based and easily diffable, which is basically what happens with .mac syncing.

According to PCheese," if any Adium users sign up for .Mac through Adium, the project gets rewarded with the .Mac Affiliate Program. "

This is just what I need for Adium

Bump! I use adium on my laptop and on my desktop mac and both run Adium. Would love to have a .mac sync between the two.

  • owner changed from nobody to bgannin.

Note: syncing logs will cause a lot of reindexing, which might be annoying, but is pretty much a consequence.

I think adium should use either .mac or rsync (for people who don't use .mac) or let the user choose from either one

I would really like this feature as well.

  • milestone changed from Adium X 1.1 to Adium X 1.2.

rsync support will not be added (at least as far as I can see.) This utility would address transfer but would wholly ignore the syncing aspects provided by Sync Services, which would require us building a skeleton of [functionality wise] to address.

  • milestone changed from Adium X 1.2 to Sometime after 1.0.

When the branch is completely and merged into trunk, assign to the adequate milestone.

So what happened here? Is this still planned?

  • patch_status set to None.
  • pending changed.

http://trac.adiumx.com/browser/branches/adium_syncing appears to have been dormant for a very long time (almost 2 years), and almost all the modifications were in the Synch_Schema subdir - it'd be easy to bring the existing work up to date with /trunk

http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/DotMacSyncing seems to suggest that we could impliment this as a light-weight and faceless app inside our bundle. I think it's worth reviving the project, but would it be beneficial to wait until after we've finished the key/value transition at least?

Thoughts?

(In [23941]) Merging r17213:23896 with the SyncServices branch. This brings it up to the current 1.3b2 release, refs #403.

  • owner changed from bgannin to earthmkii.
  • status changed from new to assigned.
  • component changed from Tiger Only to Adium Core.
  • milestone changed from Good idea for "later" to Adium X 1.4.

I'm willing to start some work on this, and I think it's reasonable to target it for 1.4
