The biggest thing that we got out of the "why do people like Proteus" thread on the forums was that we really need to reevaluate the default settings for adium. The appearance should be "more OSX like" if possible (whatever that means).

Some thoughts from various folks below (feel free to add on, devs).

Adium should include at least one non-duck dock icon so that all the lazy duck haters dont think adium is just all ducks.

Proposed Default Included Xtras (from the list below)

This set of xtras is, in my (CFM's) opinion, about the best we've got for being Aqua/OSXish.

  • Stockholm (in svn)
  • Adiumy - Already built in
  • Tokyo Train Station (in svn, slightly modified by the author for shorter contact signed on / signed off sounds)
  • Aqualicious (in svn)
  • iBubble (in svn)
  • Default (I would say Adiumicons, but Proteus uses that set and it'd be pretty rude to copy them that much)
  • PSS-2 (in svn)

Possible inclusions (get permission from the author before adding to this list!)

  • Dock Icons
    • Adiumy - Already built in
    • Glenda AT&T gives permission for this image to be used in whatever. If we used it in a t-shirt they would want a t-shirt, but that's about it.
  • Sound Sets
    • Tokyo Train Station (already included in svn, slightly modified by the author for shorter contact signed on / signed off sounds)
    • Something shorter and less tonal would be nice.
  • Service Icons
    • Aqua - Already built in
    • PSS-2

Why is this ticket open? The duck is the personality for Adium. If a user would like a non-duck icon, they can download one.

This is not just for the dock icon Kiel. It's a full review ticket, which needs to be done before completing 1.0.

Here are my thoughts as to what would be the best and why:

- iBubble as the other included dock icon (Aqua/OSX like, and sort of similar to iChat)

- Stockholm (blue and grey variant) as the default message view. It is a mixture of Mockie and Plastic, which is very easy on the eyes. (http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=1760)

- Renkoo ("Naked" variant), maybe not as the default, but it would be a very nice looking included style. (http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=2160)

Both of those message styles are among the top rated on AdiumXtras as well.

Given that users of Microsoft Messenger aren't terribly satisfied with the Mac version, they'll probably come to Adium as a replacement. I thought it might be appropriate to include the MSN emoticons in the 1.0 release. We have the permission of eevyl (the author of the xtra). This xtra has been nominated in the ticket's description.

I'd like to nominate the iAdiumBubble 2.1 icons for inclusion. I find them more HIG compliant than the duck, while still using it as a Adium's "brand".

I think there should be at least one more service icon pack included by default so there isn't just one choice in the service icon drop down menu by default. And to make the decision easy if you do decide to include a service pack, theres only two on adiumxtras: Gaim 2.0 and pss-2.

I think it would be quite usefull to have one emoticonsets for each protocol. All users like to find the "normal" emoticons. Further, I think the less; the better. Or at least try to set a number in advance (fe. 5 of every) as not to overkill it. I see lots of great things posted, and I would hate to be the one that has to choose.

I personally like our current emoticon set, though it'd be nice if it were a bit expanded. I do not think we should use the "Adiumicons" set as our default... it's not a bad set, but it's the Proteus default set and that's just not cool.

The default status and service icons are fine in my opinion, but I'd love to see the others as the default/active xtras on 1.0's install.

Some comments on the default notifications. By default, visual notifications are off, only audio notifications are active. I don't think that is likely to be the most popular default configuration (the following comments are in the spirit of getting defaults that most people like).

I propose something moderately akin to the default set used by Google Talk on Windows (their engineers have actually had a fair bit of discussion on the most useful types of notifications, and I'm sure it'll be interesting to watch what they do with GTalk in the future). Basically, it works a bit like this:

If app is in foreground: Notification if buddies sign in. Perhaps there could be something like a popup for new sign-ins only if the contact list is hidden (since if the contact list is active, you see people signing in/out with colored notices anyway).

If app is in background: Notification if buddies sign in. Notification with blurb if new message arrives.

As for audio notifications, most apps seem to default to at least some sound when a contact signs in and when a message is received.

Somewhat related, tangentially at least, in the advanced preferences under Contact List, there is the option to show transitions as contacts sign on and off. Is this a controversial option? I think it's kinda neat to have on by default, and it would get rid of one option in the preferences (in an effort to simplify those).

Largely agreed -- something like Visual Notifications, with some audio added, should be the default.

Transitions: It's controversial only insofar as it carries a nasty performance hit. Anything older than a 1 ghz machine or so and all that extra drawing on a big list can become laggy.

I figured I'd make myself useful and make a proposed patch for the notifications, which I found in Resources/BuiltInEventPresets.plist. One problem, where can I find a list of applicable ActionIDs and EventIDs?

Secondly, a fresh run (trashed prefs) of r15926 doesn't use Aqualicious by default (well, it's set to Aqualicious, but broken somehow). The default list layout and appearance is used, and switching to something else and back to Aqualicious does nothing.

eurotrash, what language does Adium run in for you, out of curiosity?

Unfortunately there is no central place for actionIDs, though we should definitely create one. Do a global search on registerActionID: to find all the actions which are current registered.

For eventIDs, I believe the list in AIAdium.h:131 is complete. Let us know if any are missing.

I run Adium in English.

Speaking to Catfish_Man, it seems the list issues may be related to ticket 3559 (though he mentioned he also suspects another, unrelated issue).

I eventually found AIAdium.h (yay for grep), a couple of the events could use some comments, or maybe they just seem a bit unclear to me. I'll look for the ActionIDs, thanks.

Evan, where are sound events handled? BuiltInEventPresets.plist only seems to store visuals and dock notifications, there is no listing of the sound events usually used. I have a patch pretty much ready to go, but I'd like to modify the sound stuff too to make it more complete. Catfish_Man has a copy of what I currently have.

Ignore that last comment.

After talking to some folks on IRC, it seems that when a soundset is loaded, by default any available sounds are activated. In that case, we can't specify that only a subset of those sounds should be active.

It would be nice to be able to specify the default sounds within BuiltInEventPresets.plist instead, so we could default to only having sounds for contacts coming online and sending you a message (or whatever ends up being the default) out of the box.

A new version of Aqualicious is available.

1.2 - Added a background color to contacts that sign on and off. Contacts coming online fade green and contacts signing off fade grey.

My personal opinion: gonedark message style and glenda icons are very specific already. I think the extras should be recognizable for everyone (it seems like both extras come from certain games).

Instead of Glenda, i'd go for iBubble(it's simple, clear it's an IM application) There are more of this kind.

I find that gone dark message style is much too cluttered and will probably hurt your eyes after a while. But there are many good ones, i feel it's very difficult to choose.

About the StatusColours Dock icon set: Those colors don't match up to the colors we use for status in our default status icon set. If they did, I for one would be more open to them.

The msn icon pack is very old. It should be upgraded to: http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=1 AFAIK that one includes every default msn emoticon. http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=851 is quite popular on the xtras site too.

(In [17574]) Refs #3134. Adding code to allow us to remove contact list xtras from being default-visible, while not breaking them for people the use them. We still take the disk space hit for them, but it's only a few k so I don't think it's a big deal. Thanks to The_Tick for the idea.
