Description (Last modified by tick)

MSN seems to be dropping messages that I've sent more often than not. I would get a "COnversation error" before but now I am not getting anything, for all I know, the message made it fine.

[additionally, this has been reported by Tim Jeffries as happening on AIM as well. see #1187 and #1322 for further information. --boredzo]

[additionally, this has been reported by scurry as happening on Yahoo as well. see #2332 for further information. --The_Tick]

I get that all the time "unknown conversation error" and sometime 'Could not send; a connection error occurred." i'm trying to find out what causses it and apparently if Adium has less bandwidth, as in, there some software downloading stuff and all that. It starts cracking up and returnin this unknown error, then, after some minutes, it resets the msn connection, and it's all fine and dandy again. So it appears that something is causing and excess flood or something, and because of that excess the msn protocol resets the connection, hummm. makes sense to me, but I'm not a programmer ;) good luck I hope this was helpfull

Clearing the milestone as this is a gaim issue

05/26/2005 12:45:37 PM changed by ryan.

Are you sure this is a gaim issue? I always talk to my friend running Gaim on slackware and he has no complaints about messages dropping. Infact, I very often miss his messages. He constantly sees on his end 'conversation window closed' when the window has always been open. I would also get a 'conversation error', but most times the messages just don't get through without error. I also speak with my brother who users MSN Messenger and I constantly miss his messages, which is very frustrating because we use it all the time to discuss our company. Hope this helps, Tks.

Nevermind, I search the Gaim bug list and it seems to be more frequently reported there. In fact there are bugs dating back to two years ago with the same symptoms, which doesn't make it seem to promissing for a resolution. Poop

I'm using the latest version of Adium (0.86) and am experiencing this problem in virtually every MSN conversation that I have! This is very frustrating, I'm sure you'll agree!

12/05/2005 06:47:09 PM changed by anonymous

I send messages to some friends of mine in MSN and sometimes I don't get responses. I think that those messages haven't arrived and I haven't seen the errors. It's very frustrating when you ask someone and don't get an answer.

12/06/2005 05:49:09 AM changed by anonymous

I'm using the latest version of Adium (0.86) on OS X 10.3.9. When having conversations with people using MSN Messenger I find that quite often their messages to me don't get through. No error messages are received by them or me. I initially assumed that as I wasn't getting any response to my messages that they weren't getting through, but it turns out that people were getting my messages and were replying to them, only for them to be dropped. This is a serious problem that makes Adium virtually useless in practice. Please help!

most recent anonymous: please read this ticket again. this ticket is for if YOUR messages (outgoing) are being dropped. your issue, that messages are not being received, is separate and should be filed in a new ticket.

FWIW, I have this issue for up to 60 seconds whenever I first launch Adium (or rather, when I first connec to MSN). I'm using Adium 0.88 on OS X 10.4.4.

fmoledina: I think you're describing #2834; please see that ticket for more information as well as a test build in progress seeking to fix the issue.

Adding Yahoo

(follow-up: ↓ 24 ) 07/17/2006 01:21:44 PM changed by anonymous

This is happening to me as well using the 1.0 beta client (still happening with beta 5). I use AIM and Yahoo and have only noticed it with Yahoo. The symptom for me is a conversation is taking place normally, then the friend tries to send me a message and Adium shows that the friend is typing a message by changing the little graphic next to the screen name in the tab. But then the message never arrives to me.

Me: OS X 10.4.7, AdiumX 1.0b5, Yahoo IM Friend: XP Pro SP 2, Yahoo IM client 7.5.0.819

03/30/2007 02:18:26 AM changed by dmnd

I'd like to report that this happens to me a *lot* with MSN. Often, after successfully sending messages for about 5 minutes or so, Adium will silently fail to deliver messages until I close and reopen the chat window. This is really annoying...

I use AIM and Yahoo and have only noticed it with Yahoo.

Same here — I use Yahoo and AIM, but messages seem only to be dropped in Yahoo. There've been issues with my avatar and status in Yahoo as well, but the big problem is dropped messages. The person on the other end (using the Yahoo web inteface on a PC) thinks the message has gone through, but I never see it. This is at least 3% or so of all messages. [Adium 1.1.4; OS X 10.4.10]

Replying to Robby:

Does anyone experience these problems in newer versions of Adium?

Yes, still experiencing this problem with Yahoo chats in version 1.2.4.

Sent messages are getting dropped at an average rate of about 1 in 5. I RECEIVE all messages. There are no errors, or warnings. After a while, i just try to compare the chat window of the recipient, and my own, only to see that a bunch of my own sent messages never make it over.

I'm using MacOS 10.5.2. Please reopen.

This is a long ticket, and I *did* only skim over it, rather than reading it thoroughly, however, I think we should do a few things to confirm the problem:

  1. Those that can reproduce this, if you have access to Windows or Linux, download the latest version of Pidgin to see whether or not it occurs with that.
  2. Get us a debug log (see CurrentAdiumDebug) and attach it here - do not paste in the text area.
  3. Does this occur with every single user you have on your Yahoo list? I'm surprised that this wouldn't be reported more often as I'm sure we have quite a number of Yahoo users, yet I haven't seen this reported in duplicate tickets at all in the last year...

Sorry I meant Yahoo, MSN, or AIM contacts (not just Yahoo).

(in reply to: ↑ 5 ) 04/14/2008 02:07:56 PM changed by whoissasha

I will download the debug version, and attach output from problem sessions.

I have noticed this issue with one particular user with whom I chat regularly; I don't have a bunch of contacts on Yahoo, but I will try to duplicate the issue with another contact.

I can try to download Pidgin and see if the issue is present in another client using Libpurple.

Please note that it will take me a few days to compile this information together.

I'm also seeing messages dropped using Adium 1.2.7 on Mac OS X 10.5.3.

It seems to happen quite often. At least once a day or so. Both messages that I send and receive seem to be dropped with no error indication.

It's very frustrating when I ask a question, don't get a response, ask it again an hour later, and find out they never received it in the first place. Or I found out they responded an hour ago, but I never received it!

Most of my contacts are Yahoo IM contacts.

It could have something to do with when my VPN connection is dropped or established, or when the connection to my wireless router is dropped or established, or when Adium itself disconnects or reestablishes its connection. I didn't have this problem when I used Fire (or at least not so much that it was so obvious).
