Behind a strict firewall, Adium won't connect to ANY service, while all other clients do

Description

We have a very strict firewall at work. I can't open any ports, and I think all but HTTP is shut down. I have accounts with three services I often use: Yahoo messenger, AIM and google (jabber).

When using my AIM with iChat, there's no problem at all. iChat logs on without problem, it doesn't even ask anything about proxies and such. Yahoo messenger won't log on with default settings on, but there's a funky little feature under "network preferences" called "Firewall with no proxy". When this option is checked, Yahoo logs on without further problems.

I tried searching for Yahoo messenger HTTP proxy servers, and found this: http://au.help.yahoo.com/help/au/mesg/unix/unix-06.html

But even with these settings enabled in Adium, I still couldn't connect, while the old messenger application logged on without problem...

I really want to start using adium on a regular basis - If you guys can fix this you will be my heroes.

So this is a problem connecting over http proxies with just yahoo, or multiple protocols?

All I've tried (Yahoo, MSN and Google Talk). It simply takes forever to connect and then dies. Just the same as Yahoo messenger when "firewall with no proxy" option is not selected.

The reason I mentioned Yahoo messenger in particular is that there's a special option in the program for this situation (iChat seems to adept automatically, since there's no problem at all connecting).

exact same problem with Yahoo! and Gtalk but only a recent problem...

11/15/2005 04:02:32 AM changed by mocken@physik.uni-freiburg.de

I'm behind a firewall, and I have to use a Proxy. Both ICQ and Yahoo Messenger work when set to use the proxy and Port 443 (https) for the connection (no other port is allowed by the firewall/proxy). But in Adium, ICQ disconnects and reconnects every couple of seconds (until the server starts blocking me), and Yahoo never connects at all. In the same setup, the original AOL Messenger, reconnects about once every quarter of an hour (iChat just disconnects and requires a manual reconnect), whereas with Adium, there seems to be no interruption.

Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I never use to but I am having a problem connecting to the yahoo messanger. I have port 5050 open. I still don't seem to be able to connect. I get a Gaim error

yeah i have the same problem with AIM...currently at Ferris State University and they have a pretty strickt firewall, i've messed around with proxies and everything and have been unable to get AIM to connect...I continue to get the Gain error. If anyone has any useful information please let me know

a correction to my first report - my MSN account works fine when "connect via HTTP" is checked. this is exactly the option i want for all the rest of the accounts (as it exists in the original yahoo messenger application, for example).

I'm not sure if this is the same problem or not, but around the same time as these messages started, Adium stopped logging on to AIM for me. It keeps asking me for my password, trying to connect, and asking for my password again. It used to work just fine, but now it won't work at all. I've tried everything, but my password works fine for AIM proper and AOL proper, but not for Adium connecting to AIM. Please help!

I am having kind of the same problems this group has. I am unble to connect to msn directly or via audium. Web msn works "fine" (able to chat with just one person per connection). The message that I get is "Gaim error" Connection error from notification server: messenger.hotmail: writing error. If anyone has a clue about what is going on and possible ways to solve this issue, I will appreciate it!

I'm getting a similar issue when attempting to connect to google talk through our strict proxy...

ICQ connects through the same proxy fine, but when I try to connect to google talk I get the following error:

<username>@gmail.com (GTalk) : Gaim error Proxy Connection Error 502

Everytime I try to connect to AIM and Yahoo, I get a connection error 'gaim error'. This only started to happen once I downloaded the newer version of Adium. Before, my Adium was working fine-- I had no problems.... so how can I fix this problem?

02/12/2006 05:01:41 AM changed by kjkoster@kjkoster.org

I am seeing the same thing. At home I can connect, at work (two locations, different companies) the proxies do not let me connect. It makes no difference whether I use the global settings, or manually enter the firewall settings. I seem to get 502 errors in one instance.

Is there a way to enable extra logging to aid debugging this problem?

Basically, the firewalls are doing what they're designed to do. There are some ways around this, and I'll look into what Adium does with proxies...

I am not behind a ccorporate firewall. I use Little Snitch to monitor my netword traffic. Today I started playing with OS X firewall settings (both with Little Snitch on/off) and, guess what? Adium connects without any problems.

So please forgive my ignorance, but is this meant to happen this way? Or does Adium only respond to router firewalls, which I haven't tried yet?

04/25/2006 11:38:25 AM changed by anonymous

The firewalls mentioned by users on this list are network firewalls; devices external to your individual computer. Little Snitch a personal firewall, or host firewall. Its security settings affect only your computer whereas a network firewall affect every machine whose traffice passes through said firewall.

Like the others I am dealing with the gaim error issue. I can connect with Yahoo and MSN messengers without a problem but my AOL accounts are closed off to me. Is there a way I will be able to reconnect with my AOL friends?

Is there any resolve on this issue? Why does the AIM CLIENT connect by simply checking "behind firewall" with no other settings modified, yet adium has so much trouble?

Hello???

08/28/2006 12:56:41 PM changed by mlf

there is a workaround. For example, the AIM servers listen on all ports. You can do Preferences->accounts->account in question->edit->options and set the port to "80".

08/28/2006 01:49:16 PM changed by satyrica@yahoo.com

I have tried this "workaround" and it infinitely goes into the "connecting" phase before going "offline" then cycling though the process again and agina.

Short: doesn't work here.

Please advise. (Again, the AIM client connects in 4 seconds with no port modifications.)

With regards to Google Talk:

If port 443 is available then you can connect to Google on this port with the following two check boxes checked:
- allow plain text authentication
- Force-old style SSL
and setting the port to 443 ( https port ).

Since this is a configuration which is supported by Google Talk, it would be nice to make this an obvious setting in the Google Talk account settings. The fact the Google Talk supports this is confirmed by this page:
