Facebook Account Sign-in Causes Poor Battery Performance

Reported by: mer191 Assigned to:

Severity: normal Keywords: facebook battery

Description

I have recently noticed that the battery meter on my MacBook shows approximately 50% less time remaining on battery when I am signed into my Facebook account than when I am not. The fan noise increases as well.

By default, Adium signs onto all accounts when I start my machine. I have noticed that even though it was charging overnight (the MacBook is a month old), the battery would show less than an hour left shortly after startup.

The Adium icon on the doc showed the duck with a spinning black box to the top right. I closed Adium and the time returned to an acceptable 3+ hours. I then restarted Adium and noticed the previous drop-off. I signed off of all accounts, then signed back on one at a time, noticing that only Facebook causes the meter to read incorrectly.

For an application to cause poor battery performance, it would need to be taking up resources - most likely high CPU resource usage which eat up the battery much faster. Check your Activity Monitor to see if you can confirm this. If so, you will need to get a sample of Adium while it is ONLY connected to Facebook. See Sampling

If Adium is not taking up heavy resources, then (to my knowledge) it is impossible that Adium is the cause of this particular problem.

I noticed this on 1.3.2b1 also. This happens when no network connections is available, and the Facebook part is trying to connect. During those conditions, CPU revs up to 61% or even 95% on my MacBook. I have attached profiling results when no network connections are available and when all accounts are disabled (Sample of Adium.txt) and two samples when the Facebook account is enabled (Sample of Adium1/2.txt).
